Since its founding in 1957, the International Development Association of the Furniture Industry of Japan (IDAFIJ) has been Japan's only globally active association with the objective of internationalizing the Japanese furniture industry.
Initially established as the Japan Export Furniture Manufacturer's Association (JEFMA), the organization concentrated for the first few decades on promotion of furniture export and development of international cooperation and interchange. However, as the rapid growth and globalization of the economy stimulated gradual increase of furniture imports to Japan, IDAFIJ in 1975 renamed itself to reflect its progress in a wide range of forward-looking activities, such as trade promotion of both export and import, international cooperation and interchange, and organization of the International Furniture Fair Tokyo (IFFT).
